Surprise! Instead, I was soon breathing in the aroma of fresh cut grass and Granny Smith apples. “It’s Vinho Verde,” he told me. The wine was well chilled, but I still got a warm feeling --the kind that often happens when you feel something special. It was love at first sip.
The name, Vinho Verde, reflects its Portuguese roots. It literally means ‘green wine’ and that’s exactly what it looks like in the glass. This is just what a summer wine should be: light (Vinhos have low alcohol content) with a bracing acidity.
Vinho Verde has some other entrancing characteristics, too. The wine is slightly fizzy, not strong enough to be a true sparkling wine, but with just enough effervescence to tickle the nose. And, it is bargain basement priced; generally between 4 to 5 dollars a bottle. I love a cheap date.
