Hard times are no reason for wine enthusiasts to turn to beer!
My parents used to tell my sister and me “you’ll get all of what you need and some of what you want.” I think that’s a good strategy for wine lovers wanting to support their summertime imbibing while at the same time doing the necessary belt tightening.
For these frugal times you could fill your wine racks with Two Buck Chuck , but I think there’s a better way to go. I recommend a recession six pack-- 6 tasty wines for less coin. By less coin I mean 10 dollars or less. Yeah, I know. 10 dollar wines used to be,well, swill. But that has changed— there is more wine on the market today (why is for another post). Even though less expensive wines are plentiful, good 10 dollar wines are in limited supply.
My recession six pack includes old standbys, wines I drink even when I’m flush:
· George Du Beouf Beaujolais-Villages a light red, most non red drinkers like this one
· Mark West Pinot Noir
· Indaba Sauvignon Blanc -- there are a host of South African wines that are modestly priced
· Yalumba Y series Viognier, very food friendly
· Casal Garcia Vinho Verde, one of my favorites for summer and always under 10 bucks
· Las Rocas Rosado, Spanish rose.’
Most of these wines are readily available in wine shops across the country. And, please note there are some low cost wines which are just over 10 bucks. Consider alternatives like Mionetto Prosecco, and Chateau St Michelle Merlot.
Finally, this is a good time to consider a wine lover's favorite activity—bin diving. Go to your local store and dive into the bins of heavily discounted wines. I’ve unearthed some real finds. We may be in for a long stretch of enforced penny-pinching. I know that a recession six pack is a flavorsome way to cope. And isn’t it just a little more special to sip Pinot Noir with your beans?

Great Post, found you on Frugalista Files, and I found her as we're both "Root Writers" I defintitely feel ya about keeping your "Spirits" up even when money is tight and I've written a few posts on liquor including on about boxed wine.
Best,
Alicia "Bargain Biatch"
