I may be in denial, but here on Martha's Vineyard there is no escaping the in-your-face evidence. The ferries are full of people leaving the island, people are shuttering cottages for the winter, and yard sales are everywhere as folks shed the seasonal accumulation of books, beach chairs, and object d'art impulse buys from the Artisans Fair.
I am making beach time a priority, trying to grab all of the blue sky weather I can squeeze into a day. And I'm on a steady diet of only-in-summer island staples--- heirloom tomatoes, fried clams and ice cream. I'll remember and savor the delight of those tastes during the months to come.
Alas, I've only got a few more days to wear my white linens and cottons. Can it really be the end of August?
Please know that I know some people embrace the modern fashion trend of wearing white after Labor Day, but that is just wrong. Period.
Happily, there is still time to savor the white wines of summer, really never out of season, but especially delicious with what I'm eating right now. Crisp whites like Sauvignon Blanc with its refreshing green apple and grassy notes are just right with my seafood. And pale straw colored Chenin Blanc ripe with its lemon lime zest balances the fried foods. The mineral overtones of dry Riesling make it another good choice for seafood as well as spicy food. I haven't decided which one or two of these will make it to the ice bucket.
I do know that the unofficial end of summer IS an occasion worth noting, sobering as it is. I'll pour a fizzy Vinho Verde in liquid tribute to summer memories.

Twin Vines Vinho Verde
